The most popular topic of smalltalk around Toronto right now is how remarkably mild and almost pleasant our winter was this year - hardly any snow, reasonable temperatures, far less-than-average gloominess.

Until, that is, you read something like this Guardian story about a 200-meter thick Antarctic ice shelf just under the size of Cambridgeshire that has entirely collapsed in less than a month due to the impact of global warming.
